Summer in Barbialla means many things, but one of them is certainly jam! After two very dry years, we finally had the perfect spring, and the fruit trees and bushes are loaded with yummy produce. Ilaria is not wasting time transforming them into delicious spreads. Here is a strawberry-lemon in the making...
The once-in-10-year snowstorm that passed over the farm last winter claimed a victim: the straw cover of the pergola of the swimming pool in Brentina collapsed under the weight. We just re-built a new cover and the pergola is ready to shade you from the bright sun of Tuscany. Thanks Marco for your help and company!
The new shack that hosts water tank and pumps at Il Poggio is finished. The wood is treated at high pressure to ensure the structure will last 10+years.
We are often asked what we do between December and March, when the agriturismo is closed. We feel that this image is the perfect answer: we make Barbialla prettier!
This is the iron door of Brentina Ovile before and after maintenance.
It's quite weird waking up on March 1st with 10 cm snow. It's the first time in seven years that snow comes back to Tuscany. This is a great present.
A few of us are living on the farm these quiet winter days, and wild life ventures very close to our houses. The early afternoon we took this picture we were incredibly lucky: this pack of wolves was hunting right in front of our windows.
Wolves spontaneously repopulated the area a few years back (the first ones were seen wandering around in 2014). They happen to be the only natural predator for wild boars and deer, whose population were rapidly growing out of control. Fear not, wolves do not pose a danger to human beings; they shy away from people and are rarely seen, preferring to dwelve in the largest, least accessible woods around the farm. That is why this picture is particularly amazing.
We feel very lucky to live in a place that rare, gorgeous animals like wolves can call home and to be able to share it with our guests.
Some days ago, we received a gift from our guests Francisca Denyer: she wrote this detailed article on the blog Endless Inspiration.
It is the perfect article if you want to understand the inner philosophy of Fattoria Barbialla Nuova and enjoy it day by day - semplicemente, lentamente. Thank you, Francisca and family!
Guess what we dreamt of? Bringing our guests out for a truffle hunt, making fresh pasta with them and eating a good plate of taglierini with truffles. This year the dream became true thanks to chef Francesco Lagi. This is one of the tables we set up in our garden: unforgettable! See you next year for new white truffle hunt and cooking classes experiences!
The olives this year are healthy and plump, thank to, and despite (respectively), the summer draught. The new olive oil is amazing.
A large truffle (as the current season goes), found during one of our truffle hunts.
Blue sky and warm weather are gifting Barbialla Nuova with one last spring-look before the winter. The quiet of the countryside is almost palpable, it feels like it is waiting for something. Much alike a pause between breaths. It is time for hot tea and to stock up wood for the next season.
Despite the record-dry summer, looks like the white truffles intend to make our fall special again. These were found today in one of the farm's most secluded truffle grounds...
We had the pleasure to host Johan with family and friends a few weeks ago. They really lived the Barbialla Nuova experience, trying almost everything the farm has to offer. Johan is a keen photographer and we'd like to share his album's link, where you will find plenty of great pictures he took during their holiday in Tuscany. Thanks for sharing, Johan!
A few days ago, while Frank was loading a hay roll for the cows, he found this little fella stuck in the net that surrounds the roll. Uninjured and unharmed, this hedgehog was released in the fields...but we could not miss the opportunity to take a picture. How cute can a hedgehog get? ...about this much!
We would like to thank these young artists, Femke and Ella, for these colorful drawings of their ideal farms!
